Geodynamic modeling software

The FastScape surface is colored by topography, and additionally shows the drainage area blue to white and erosion rate white to black. Geodynamic models commonly simulate surface motions by using either a free surface or a sticky air layer. Either method can produce unrealistic highs or lows in the topography because they do not account for erosional and depositional processes that redistribute surface material through time. This redistribution not only helps obtain realistic topographies, but the change in surface loading can have widespread effects on model evolution, such as lengthening the time a fault remains active Olive et al.

This is primarily done using three methods: 1 hillslope diffusion, 2 the Stream Power Law SPL , and 3 marine transport. The code originated at Dalhousie University in Canada.

The particle-in-cell method combines the strengths of the Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations of mechanics while bypassing their limitations. It can, for instance, model seismic waves propagating in sedimentary basins or any other regional geological model following earthquakes.

It can also be used for non-destructive testing or for ocean acoustics. BurnMan calculates the isotropic thermoelastic moduli by solving the equations-of-state for a mixture of minerals defined by the user. The user may select from a list of minerals applicable to the lower mantle included or easily define one of their own. It requires axisymmetric background models and runs within a 2D computational domain, thereby reaching all desired highest observable frequencies up to 2Hz in global seismology.

For more details see the website at www. Contributions by other authors have recently been added. It is a small code that allows users to learn how a spectral-element program is written. It operates on pairs of observed and synthetic single component seismograms, defining windows that cover as much of a given seismogram as possible, while avoiding portions of the waveform that are dominated by noise. A Mineos Mineos computes synthetic seismograms in a spherically symmetric non-rotating Earth by summing normal modes.

A Dynamo Calypso Calypso is a set of codes for MHD dynamo simulation in a rotating spherical shell using spherical harmonics expansion methods. It evolves the incompressible and anelastic MHD equations in spherical geometry using a pseudo-spectral approach. A Computational Science SpatialData A library for specifying spatial variation of parameters for boundary conditions, material properties, etc. Includes support for geographic projectsion via Proj4 and nondimensionalization.

Thilo Wrona and Dr. Sascha Brune. The structural analysis automatically deduces key fault parameters such as fault azimuth, throw, and heave of hundreds of rift faults and thereby quantifies the patterns of neotectonic activity in that region. We are happy to welcome our new section member - ZhiChen Wang. His research interests are in simulating the long-term deformation on the continental lithosphere with high-performance computing.

In the last two years ZhiChen investigated tectonics at rifted margins, especially the South Atlantic, and focused in particular on salt deformation mechanisms. In our section he will use numerical models to reproduce and understand rifted margins salt structures by accounting for tectonic and gravitational deformation, surface processes and complex rheology.

The Academia Europaea promotes outstanding scientific achievements worldwide in the humanities, law, economics, social and political sciences, as well as in the natural and technical sciences. Through its work, scientific findings are to be disseminated, understood and made known to a wider public. Admission to the Academia Europaea is by invitation only and is subject to a rigorous selection process by the respective section. Stephan V. Around Million years ago, the Indian Plate split away from the African Plate over a length of 7, kilometers.

In a paper published in Nature Geoscience, a mantle plume is identified as the trigger. According to the findings, the Indian Plate did not simply move away from Africa, but rotated in the process. The reason for this is the subcontinent, whose land mass acts on the much larger continental plate like an axis around which the entire plate rotates. In the south, the scissors opened, in the north they closed — there, mountain-building processes and the subduction of crustal plates were induced.

Bernhard Steinberger has calculated the movement and pressure that the super volcano near present-day Madagascar could cause further north on the Arabian Peninsula and in what is now the Mediterranean. We are happy to welcome our new section member, Kai Li , to join us. Kai completed his Master at China University of Geosciences, where his studies focused on the deep crustal structure in the South China Sea. The Gravity modelling and integrated geophysical-petrological modelling are performed to analyze the characteristics of the crustal and lithospheric structures.

In our section, Kai will use the geodynamic software ASPECT to combine rock mechanics, rheology and fundamental physical principles to reproduce key processes like faulting, lower crustal flow, and magmatism. During break-up two passive rifted margins are formed straddling a new ocean basin.
