Windows 7 speed tweaks for gaming

The intent of this guide is to allow you to tweak the system while maintaining full functionality. Yes, there is stuff you can uninstall, turn off, or disable and I will show you how to do that.

But those who followed my previous guides have seen this before , there is one thing I would like you to keep in mind. It applies to tweaking as well. Every time you make a change it costs something. For example, turning all the eye-candy off can result in more available system resources but may lessen the user experience.

It is about getting things done faster. RAM is fast and Windows 7 will take advantage of it. Consider getting an SSD. Find the correct one with your IP address listed. For gaming performance, recommended is 1 disable.

For pure throughput and data streaming, you can experiment with small values over 2. Wifi performance may see a slight improvement with disabled TcpAckFrequency as well.

Note you can also set this to 1 to reduce the nagle effect from the default of ms without disabling it. Yes, it works with Windows 7 and Windows 8. The idea behind such throttling is that processing of network packets can be a resource-intensive task, and it may need to be throttled to give prioritized CPU access to multimedia programs.

In some cases, such as Gigabit networks and some online games, for example, it is beneficial to turn off such throttling all together for achieving maximum throughput. It is only recommended to change this setting in saturated Gigabit LAN environments, where you do not want to give priority to multimedia playback. Reportedly, disabling throttling by using ffffffff can also help reduce ping spikes in some online games. This setting, in combination with the "NetworkThrottlingIndex" can help some games and video streaming.

TCP Optimizer "Advanced Settings" tab For local network large file transfers, this registry settings allows for better throughput and eliminates some file sharing event log errors Event ID error. However, reportedly it has issues with some ATI Video card drivers and certain applications performance. Therefore we recommend turning it off set to zero for gaming. Windows 10 Creators' update introduced a "Game Bar" to to help Xbox integration and gaming in general, however, they can reportedly cause stuttering during gaming, especially with Windows 10 builds prior to v This section includes gaming-specific tweaks not listed in our general tweaking articles and not implemented by the TCP Optimizer.

In the same Registry hive as the above two tweaks, you can also change the priority of Games, compared to other types of traffic. Indicates whether this is a background task. The maximum guaranteed clock rate the system uses if a thread joins disk task, in nanosecond intervals. The GPU priority. Not used in Windows XP and The task priority, ranging from 1 low to 8 high. Note for tasks with Scheduling Category of "High", this value is always treated as 2.

Reference: Multimedia Class Scheduler Service. The TCP Congestion Control Algorithm controls how well, and how fast your connection recovers from network congestion, packet loss, and increase in latency. For more info se our Windows 10 Tweaks article. It is aimed to decrease retransmissions. In essence, ECN assumes that the cause of any packet loss is router congestion.

It allows routers experiencing congestion to mark packets and allow clients to automatically lower their transfer rate to prevent further packet loss. The receiver echoes the congestion indication to the sender, which must react as though a packet drop were detected. Possible settings are: enabled, disabled, default restores the state to the system default. Default state: disabled Recommendation: "enabled" for gaming only with routers that support it, after testing.

Disable for pure throughput with no packet loss. Its effect on bulk throughput with large TCP Window are less clear. Currently, we only recommend enabling this setting in the presence of packet loss, with ECN-capable routers.

Its effects should be tested. Windows 7 Tweaks. Normally, I pass by tweak posts, but this one is misleading. I would recommend renaming your post closer to what the content describes: How to save on disk space if your PC is being run from a Solid State Disk.

Disabling the indexing is negligible on most modern systems, so the speed increase you would see would probably only be able to be measured in nano or micro-seconds. From a systems standpoint, I do not agree that anyone should perform any of these tasks, especially if they are a home-user with little or no systems repair or support experience. Disable write-caching - if the SSD does not have a cache, there can be no write caching, so it probably won't save on CPU cycles.

However disabling this feature may actually increase data seek time. Under no circumstances do I recommend that you disable either the Page File or the System Restore if you are a home user.

If you do not make regular backups of your system, which most people don't, you will find yourself in a world of hurt one day when a file or software you install decides to misbehave, either by using up all available RAM and asking for more, or by corrupting your windows install preventing you from rolling back.

Hibernation - I disable this option myself. I also disable sleep mode and turn my PC completely off when I am done using it. I don't mean to walk all over your post, as it sounds like you are trying to be helpful, and I fully respect that, I just feel that in my experience these tweaks are bad advice in general and I know multiple websites, especially PC enthusiast websites, promote these kinds of tweaks.

Yet another feature that I do not have a use for as I ensure many versions are backed up often elsewhere on the system. You may want to keep System Restore until after you mess with Number Eight below. Your choice. However, with the tasks that I personally do, I rarely, use the Windows Search feature. The indexing feature has improved, though, as it is much more sensitive to an active user and will reduce the resources used while a person is actively using the system.

You can now disable the Windows Search Feature:. Reduce the overhead associated with Windows 7 new Theme. As a side note, the new Aero is a big reason to upgrade to Windows 7 and I really enjoy the new look. Also, in order to get back Aero Themes selection after performing these steps, they will be grayed out of selection , you will have to reverse enable the features and reboot.

After that, Disable and Stop the Themes service. Download and install all updated drivers from the hardware manufacture sites. I cannot tell you what site you need to go to for your system components as I have no idea what is installed in your system, but do your computer a favor and get updated drivers for everything.
